Wig tutorial #2: Two High Ponytails

I’ve recently been experimenting wigs myself. I’m no expert so this is all based on experience. I actually just saw a reference picture of how the wig looks like when it was done (not during the process of styling) and I just tried it for myself. So here goes:

Wig Tutorial #2: How to do two high ponytails – the natural way?

The most popular character I know who has two significant high ponytails would probably be Hatsune Miku. But for this tutorial, let’s work on Runo of Bakugan series. Why? Because her hair is shorter haha! Again, those experienced with wigs will tell you to wear a short wig first and clip-on two ponytail extensions, like so:

Easier said than done. Yes very similar to Miku Hatsune of Vocaloid right? Actually, I would encourage this tutorial for this style as well. You may apply this to both straight or curly wigs. But just like my previous tutorial about The Single High Ponytail, this will take bigger patience because we are working with TWO ponytails here. The more, the longer time. You may as well buy the extensions, but if you want to learn it my way, I’ll be glad to share. Ok let’s start!

Materials you need:

1 long wig (take note to get a wig that’s TWICE the length of the actual ponytail you’re trying to achieve)

1 Wig comb or any teethy comb (do not use normal hair brush, there is a specialized Wig brush for wigs too)

2 medium sized hair Clamps (those finger-like hair things) or 2 huge hair Clips

Lots of hair Elastics (or what I like to call, Sanrios)

And a wig head! Or get a friend or family member to wear the wig for you because you can’t do this alone.

TIP#1: COMB THE WIG FIRST! If it’s naturally curly, then no need.

STEP 1.  Let’s put on that wig! Start from the forehead, holding the sides in place, all the way down to your nape. If your wig comes with an adjustable garter, clip it on. Make sure you secure your wig w/ bobby pins.

STEP 2. Get 1/4 of hair on the HALF-SIDE (see picture below) and fasten it with an elastic band/ sanrio. Do the same on the other side and make sure the levels are equal.

STEP 3. Then start by taking a strand of hair (by 2 inches in width) from the RIGHT ear-side and drape it on opposite LEFT tail.

STEP 4. Hold it using a hair clam or large hair clip. Then on the opposite side, do the same.

STEP 5. Repeat this step by taking 2 inches width of hair every time: LEFT TAKE & RIGHT HOLD. RIGHT TAKE & LEFT HOLD. And go from bottom to all the way on top. You will be going in a zig-zag motion. The purpose of this is to cover the wig’s inner net/ skeletal frame.

TIP #2: Remember to keep combing your wig to keep it neat & tangle-free!

By then, the wig should look like this:

STEP 6. Now let’s tie it up naturally! Get a hold of one side first (left or right), hold all the hair you gathered up there with one hand & SLOWLY remove the clips you used. Once you got all the hair fastened, get your main ribbon/ elastic band (should be thicker than the sanrios) and tie that part of hair in a pony tail. Do the same with the other side.

STEP 7. And viola, your finished product~ two high ponytails! Again, I ask you put patience while pulling the wig back & forth into a ponytail. It’s just like you would do to real hair, but a wig needs extra care. Stubborn strands can still create tangles!

If your character requires a special ribbon, go ahead and prettify it! Like Runo, she has this orange & red ribbons holding her ponytails. This what I did:

TIP #3: Add a little hair spray to keep the wig pulled back and smooth looking.

The finished wig is Runo from Bakugan Battle Brawlers, cosplayed by my dear friend Mady Liao. Doesn’t she look cute? Although many have mistaken her for a Hatsune Miku cosplay, it can very well be associated with that haha!

I hope it was easy enough. Try it on your wig and send me a link here. I look forward to seeing your piece! Gambatte ne!
