I started out as a con-goer back then. It mattered so much to me how accurate and realistic one person can go to look exactly like the character they are cosplaying. So I’d like to take this opportunity to feature some of my favorite Cosplayers, whom I’ve had such honor in meeting and befriending along the way.. -katz
CosFeature n#7: Yan-san.. aka Cvy
K- My next feature is an all-time favorite international cosplayer. I saw her back in DeviantArt and I fell in love the moment I saw her Onion Knight cosplay. I was an aspiring Terra wanna-be at that time and seeing an O.K. was just *whow* for me!
So let us start from the beginning, shall we? Ms. Cvy, you look really different in normal-mode wahhh! *ahem* Your interest in cosplay, how and when did it start?
C- Gaara from Naruto got me so hysterically in love I went all out and discovered cosplay. He was how it all started many years ago.
K- Ah so you be the first one I’ve interviewed referring the interest to cosplay because of a cartoon character, instead because of seeing another great cosplayer. *bow* Tell me, did you make your first costume back then? Or you had it tailored?
C- I made it (Gaara’s sand gourd especially) with the help from my friends, at that point, we all knew nothing about cosplay and the skills to craft it but I reminisced that time a lot because it was such joy working together with them through the night, finding out ways on how to make the prop most effectively, is like an art school group project.
Gaara – Naruto series
K- Not bad for starters huh?
Do you prefer solo or group cosplays?
C- No preference. It each has its own good and bad attributes. But if is to attend an event/con, I would prefer to be with a partner or a group so we can look out for each other and have a frolic time role-playing. It gets a little boring by yourself if not.
Heero Yuy – Gundam Wing
Kagamine Rin – Vocaloid: Sandplay of the Singing Dragon version
K- *spazz* Amazing cosplays! How much has cosplay taught you? Pros and Cons?
C- Mostly pros, to put it optimistically. I wish I could have paid more attention in my art class though since it involved so much crafting. Cosplay got me to learn sewing and looking at little things in life that people might not notice (for example a pvc pipe, a door knob, a slip stopper, a paper fastener and even the cap cover of a spray bottle) because sometimes those belittled things could be
useful to your costume or prop.
And for cons? I will single out one of the most well-known villain every cosplayer will bound to have experience; money. I’m confident I don’t need to elaborate further. LOL.
Ventus – Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Li Syaoran – Card Captor Sakura
K- Wahhh Syaoran-kun! *ahem* Yes, money definitely is an enemy grr! Oh, have you cosplayed abroad as well? If yes, how can you compare it locally? If not, what could you have wished for?
C- The con in Taipei was the most impressionable one ever. Their cosplay etiquette is also pretty impressive when it comes to photography. You will not ever find a picture of yourself unprepared or any form of candidness (at least in my experience) because they will always ask for your permission for a photo beforehand and will stand some distance away from you unless they asked for a close-up. They will also EACH bow and say thank you even if there is a huge lot of them going at you. The cosplayers are extremely welcoming and polite too. By nature, people prefer to be clustered in their own group of comfort but in this case, there is really not a trace of distance, you will instantly feel at home. The experience I had there is incomparable to any I have attended overseas so far.
Singapore had so much to learn but I’m seeing some improvement bit by bit. It takes time to cultivate this degree of respect and social grace.
K- Cosplay aside, what do you do outside the hobby/community?
C- Mundane things like watching tv, reading or gaming. Gosh, they are all so homely D: I need to pick up drawing and photography again though. I love to trek too but Singapore has so little interesting spots. I think the other most thrilling thing in my life is to spend everyday working and saving up so I could travel abroad to see more of the other side.
K- Based on your experience, how’s about a message to aspiring cosplayers out there?
C- I think it may have been said many times but you should cosplay only because you like it, not for the sake of it.
Killua – Hunter X Hunter
White Rabbit – Alice in Wonderland (Steampunk version)
K- Now, please tell me something about yourself that no one knows. Like, what makes you YOU?
C- I don’t know, is a good question though. I would like to think of myself of being different and special but I’m not haha.
Ciel Phantomhive – Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji)
